Memorial Day Big Bear Camp (May 2021)

ANOTHER quick one-nighter just to say we did it!

This writeup is also nothing to write home about, but I want to document a few things for my own posterity. The trip spans a Sunday through Monday during Memorial Day weekend in 2021. The roster for this trip includes myself in the Blue Yota, Scott Barnes and Lucy the Dog in the green XJ, and Brent Barnes in the red ZJ. The details of this trip are quite fuzzy, but I think some of the photos are fun to look back on!

Making camp

The story starts with us departing Orange County and heading to Big Bear in the San Bernardino Mountains. We don’t have a specific camp site in mind, but we’re looking for the best yellow post or otherwise flat spot of ground we can find on this busy Memorial Day weekend.

We do find out spot and in what seems like classic-Scott fashion, he finds a way to wet himself.

Taking a load off before making dinner

We eat steak, green beans, and french bread for dinner and spend the night reading old books and watching the sky.

The morning view is flawless

The weather is amazing as we pack up our site and hit the trail. There’s no definite plan for where we go; we will quite literally end up wherever the trail takes us as we checkout locations found on our map that might be “interesting”.

Welcome to the South Shore
Champion Lodgepole Pine Trail
A nice view of Bluff Lake

We spend several hours simply driving the back trails on the south side of Big Bear Lake checking out various yellow post camp spots, trying to figure out which one will make the best spot for next trip.

A little 3rd wheel airtime
Solid axle flexibility

We wrap up this short excursion by exiting the area on Clark’s Grade. This is a super cool, super exposed trail that is definitely worth the time to drive.

Thank you for taking the time to read my writeup of our Memorial Day Big Bear trip! Feel free to comment with constructive feedback or simply to share your thoughts or your own stories. Make sure you check back in the “Trips” category to see the other trips I’ve taken with my blue yota!
